Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Here we have a fairy tale with a twist. With a beautiful, beloved (but sadly departed) mother, a fairy godmother, an evil step-mother, two evil step-sisters, a charming prince, and even a glass slipper, this may seem like a familiar tale, but you have never heard Cinderella like this.

Ella is given a gift at birth by the well-meaning, but always imprudent fairy, Lucinda. Ah, the gift of obedience! What Lucinda thinks will be a marvelous treasure, Ella’s mother and godmother recognize at once as a terrible curse. Just think of it– never being able to disobey a direct command, no matter who issues it– friend, foe, loved one, ogre, or troll. But Ella is nothing if not spunky. Always her own person in spite of her cursed gift; foes, ogres, bullies and step-sisters are no match for the indomitable Ella.
