Courage for Beginners by Karen Harrington

Most adults will tell you that middle school was the worst time of their lives. It’s just kind of awful for most of us. For Misti Murphy it’s worse than awful. Her best friend, Anibal Gomez, informs her before the first day of seventh grade that he is performing a social experiment to see if he can reinvent himself as a hipster. Of course that means he can’t be seen talking to Misti. Great. So now Misti has no friends just when she really, really needs a best friend. Her father is in the hospital with a serious head injury and no one knows when he’ll be able to come home. And what Misti hasn’t ever told anyone, ever, except Anibal Gomez, is that her mom doesn’t leave the house. Ever. At all. So, yeah, having her dad in the hospital is kind of a huge deal. Suddenly it’s up to Misti to face the nefarious world and start making things happen!
