Knucklehead by Jon Scieszka
Knucklehead is the autobiography of the hilarious Jon Scieszka, author of The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and Math Curse. As much as I enjoy his very funny picture books, this (mostly) true story of life growing up in a family of six boys is even funnier. Maybe you’ve heard someone laughing. Really, really laughing, and someone has asked, “What’s so funny?” But when they explained, it wasn’t funny at all. So they say something like, “I guess you just had to be there.” Therein lies the genius of Jon Scieszka (yes, OBOBers, you will learn to correctly pronounce “Scieszka”)- he puts you there. In the story. You get the joke. You are in on it because you are right there in the living room when his mom asks, “What happened to the couch?!” You are right there in his fifth grade classroom when Sister Margaret Mary asks, “Would you like to share it with the rest of the class?” You are right there in the back of the station wagon when the puke-covered cat jumps on Brian. And you are laughing out loud. Seriously. If you’re not laughing right now then I guess you just had to be there. You better go read the book. You can thank me later.
