Escaping the Giant Wave

Escaping the Giant Wave by Peg Kehret

Kyle was excited about his family’s summer trip to the Oregon coast. He’d never seen the Pacific Ocean. He imagined playing in the sand and collecting shells. He did not imagine that the school bully would be staying in the same hotel, and he did not imagine that disaster would strike when he and his younger sister were alone in their hotel room. But Kyle’s dad had told the kids what to do if there was a tsunami, and Kyle finds the courage to follow those instructions when he’s uncertain whether his parents are even still alive.

This book may be frightening to younger readers who enjoy our coast. I recommend it as a read-aloud and discussion starter, especially if your child is a worrier.
