The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine

Historical Fiction. Marlee is a middle schooler in Arkansas during a time in our country when there were separate schools for white kids and colored kids. To be friends with someone from a different race got people killed. Marlee is brilliant, but painfully shy. She doesn’t talk to anyone outside of her family– not even her teachers. Then she meets Liz, the new girl at school and things begin to change. This is a book about courage, change, friendship, finding your voice, standing for what is right and figuring out what the right thing is. Five stars! I loved it.

If you enjoyed Bigger Than a Breadbox and Eleven you’ll enjoy this book.
